As we’ve seen in previous installments of Scamfish, scammers seem to appear out of thin air once the lives of the victims seem the darkest. Once everything seems to be falling apart in our guests’ lives, the scammer comes along and presents themselves as their knight in shining armor, the answer to all of life’s questions and the solution to all of their problems. This is where our story begins today.
The Tragic News
Tina was going through a separation from her husband of more the 20 years. She found herself lonely and curious about the opportunities the world of online dating could bring her. when she saw ads for online dating services online, she decided it was time to give it a try. Before long, Terry went on a few coffee dates, none o which amounted to much, when finally, she reached out to a man named paul on Christain Mingle. Paul seemed to be immediately attached to her. They hit it off, and he asked her to move to Google Hangouts.
During this time, the difficulty for Tina intensified. Tina was a breast cancer survivor of 13 years and a 33 year Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor. One day, Tina’s Doctor called and told her that the recent test showed a spot on her spine. Tina knew that this spot meant the worst, stage 4 cancer. And to make things even worse, because of her recent divorce, Tina was left without insurance. Without insurance, she wouldn’t be able to afford the mountain of medical expenses that come with a battle with stage four cancer. It seemed as though Tina was living the last days of her life. She didn’t want to live her last days alone.
When Tina broke the news to Paul, he immediately confessed his love for her, and because of the bad news, and Tina expecting the end of her life to be near, she Tina told paul that she loved him back.
Pual’s Evil Plan
Because “Paul” had ulterior motives from the begging, he saw this as the perfect opportunity to take what Tina had left in her last days. Before long, Paul had Tina sending wire transfers containing thousands of dollars. He was even finding out financial information about Tina that to this day, she can’t explain how he knew.
One day, Tina went to the back to send thousands of dollars to Pual, when the clerk told her that she believed that Tina was being scammed. She refused to approve any more transfers. At this point in the relationship, Paul’s manipulative tactics were so profound that even a bank representative telling Tina that she was being scammed wasn’t enough to break the trance. Tina drove 40 min to the nearest bank to send the money through another branch.
As months went on, Tina continued her relationship with Paul. The sweet messages made it more and more difficult for Tina to act on her suspicions that Paul was not who he side he was and blocked him, but then something happened that broke the scammer’s trance forever.
Tina got a call from the doctors, and they gave her news that turned Tina’s story around. The spot on her spine turned out to be an error in the equipment, and she would live!
This good news gave Tina the strength to break off the relationship with Paul and begin her life again.
