Getting to America has been a dream of millions of people from all around the world for centuries. Although we’ve been working through issues domestically throughout our history, many people still look to America as a beacon of hope. Scammers around the world look at this as an opportunity to capitalize on vulnerable people.
Oliva grew up in Uganda and dreamed about making it to America since she was a little girl. Her ambition and intelligence took her from Uganda to Saudi Arabia where she entered the medical field and made enough money to support herself and send money back home to Uganda to support her family that was still living there, but she always knew in her heart that she wanted more. She wanted to move to America and earn her citizenship.
Oliva thought she got her opportunity when she found a company selling passports online. The company’s page on Facebook looks authentic enough. The people she talked to over the phone seemed personable and trustworthy. Once Oliva started working with the company to get her visa, she was optimistic that she would make it to America and be able to start working and contributing to American society.
Everything seemed to be going great at first, but red flags started to pop up all over. The company started asking her for money that she wasn’t expecting to give up, and eventually, the company’s tactics started to resemble extortion. Oliva was confused, she begged them to return her passport. With Olivia having to support herself and her family back home, she couldn’t afford to keep sending the money that the company demanded.
One of the things the company demanded of her was that she had to send her passport. Once they had her passport, it was really difficult to walk away. Oliva pleaded with them frantically to give her her passport back and refund her. But eventually, she would settle for just her passport back. All in all, Oliva lost all of her savings and is struggling to support herself and her family. Oliva came to Social Catfish for help.
During the investigation, we found that the organization uses the same contact information for many of their “companies” and takes the same approach to every scam. Staying ahead of these scams means being able to know the truth. At Social Catfish, we give you the tools to see all of the information out there so you can stay safe online.
